Tenryuji Temple

Tenryuji Temple

Tenryuji was built in 1339 by the ruling shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Takauji dedicated the temple to Emperor Go-Daigo, who had just passed away.
Tenryuji is beautiful in each of its seasons, making it one of the best tourist attraction in Kyoto.

Sogenchi Teien (Sogen Pond Garden) is a popular autumn leaves viewing spot.
The Cloud Dragon on the ceiling of Tenryu-ji's Hatto was painted in 1997 by the renowned nihonga artist Kayama Matazo (1927-2004), as one of the projects commemorating the 650th anniversary of the death of Tenryu-ji's founder, Muso Kokushi.
